Farmhouse. C16 altered in C17, C18 and C20. Rendered rubble walls with hipped
asbestos slate roof, corrugated iron to stable. 2 projecting lateral stacks at the
front both rendered. The right hand one has been cut off at the eaves. The left
hand stack is rubble with offsets and a brick shaft.
Originally 3-room and through passage plan. There is no direct evidence that the
house originally had an open hall with a central hearth but the type of roof truss
with the re-use in the roof of a smoke-blackened rafter are suggestive of it. If
this was so the house was ceiled in circa early C17 and the front lateral hall stack
added. The lower room (to the right) remained unheated, the inner room had a stack
inserted (since taken down) possibly at this stage, on the front wall. In the C18
the house was remodelled internally and the roof probably raised in an effort to
upgrade it. The lower room had a fireplace added on the front wall and was lined
with panelling as a conversion to a parlour. Probably at this stage the inner room
was extended presumably for use as a kitchen. The rear barn wing behind the lower
room is probably contemporary. In the C20 modern grates were inserted into earlier
fireplaces, beams were plastered over and the inner room divided into 2. The lean-
to at the end of the inner room was added probably in late C19/early C20 as a wash-
house.
2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window front of C20 1, 2 and 3 light casements, some
metal-framed without glazing bars. C20 glazed door to right of centre under door
hood with probably C18 carved wooden brackets and C20 trellised sides. The ground
floor window beyond the left-hand stack is a 4-light casement with glazing bars,
probably C19. Outshut against left gable end. The ground floor window beyond the

against left gable end. At rear of right hand end is barn wing which projects
slightly towards the road.
Interior : the elbow of one jointed cruck has been uncovered, embedded in the front
wall, the wall having been built up above it. The roof now consists of C18 straight
principals with pegged collars slightly set into the trusses. 1 truss above the
lower end may be slightly earlier, each principal having the sockets for several
trenched purlins. Re-used at this end is a smoke-blackened timber, possibly the
original ridge pole. No original fireplaces are visible. In the former hall and
passage are 2 chamfered cross beams with hollow step stops. That in the passage has
been cut off at the end to allow access to stairs inserted at the rear. The
banisters on the first floor have turned balusters and may date from the C18
remodelling. The lower room is lined with fielded panelling with a moulded chair
rail and cornice. The original chimney piece has been removed but the panelling
above it survives. A number of C18 2 fielded-panel doors also survive on ground and
first floor.
This house is an interesting example of a probably late medieval farmhouse upgraded
in the C18 with a characteristic reversal of use of the lower and inner rooms.
