GV adjoining and to South of the Laurels)
II
Pair of cottages, The Laurels said to be a former chapel. Chaplins (on left) late
C16 or C17 with porch (possibly a later addition) dated 1718. The Laurels of
uncertain date, but probably later than Chaplins (the 2 are separated by a thick
wall on ground storey, containing what appears to be a blocked window belonging to
Chaplins). Both cottages have additions at rear. Rendered stone or cob.
Corrugated-iron roof, believed to cover thatch. 2 storeys. Chaplins has roughly
central doorway with chamfered, square-headed wood frame and plank door. Gabled
porch with rendered, solid walls and slate roof; slit window in left-hand wall.
Wood lintel at front has segmental arch and rests on ashlar block at either side,
that on left inscribed R W and that on right 1718. One window at either side of
porch on ground storey, another above it and a fourth to right in second storey;
all C19 or early C20 wood casements. Projecting brick stack in left-hand gable;
stack with brick shaft in rear wall to right. Interior has through passage with
plank walls. Ground-storey room to right has chamfered ceiling-beam with step-
stops. Rest of interior not inspected. The Laurels has doorway with C20 door to
left. One C19 or early C20 wood casement window in each storey to right. Right-
hand gable has stone stack with brick shaft on top. Interior not inspected. Both
cottages may contain interesting features concealed under plaster.
