Entrance Lodge and
Gateway to Calke

Lodge. c1805 by William Wilkins Senior. Rendered brick and
ashlar. Hipped Welsh slate roof with rendered ridge stack. Two
storeys. Canted end to drive has three glazing bar sashes to
ground floor and a smaller glazing bar sash above, flanked by
blind openings. Flat roofed porch to north is open on two sides
with round arches with impost bands and a matching blind arch to
the rear wall. Raised and fielded panelled door. Lower wing to
east has 2-light casements. Wall and gateway attached to north
west. The gateway consists of two round-arched ashlar
pedestrian entrances with moulded cornice and attic moulding.
Each arch contains a single stick rail wrought iron gate with
latticework piers. Between the two arches, a pair of similar
gates, with curved braces, and similar latticework piers. Built
as a gate lodge to Calke Abbey for Sir Henry Harpur.
