Pair of garden walls. c1704 with later C18 additions. Erected
as part of a French style garden designed by Royal Gardeners to
Queen Anne, London and Wise, for Thomas Coke of Melbourne Hall.
Work carried out by William Cooke of Walcot. Red brick with
stone dressings and deep brick plinth with chamfered copings.
Each wall is approximately 15ft high and stretches the length of
the upper terrace. To the east end of each is a pilaster strip
on moulded stone base, set above the plinth. Both walls have
flat stone copings with moulded sides and beyond the pilasters
to east, both have a later C18 extension with a segmental arch
through. Included in the Derbyshire Historic Gardens Register
at Grade I. See item 6/63 for sources.
