19-FEB-03 Brick Chest Tomb south of Gates Monume
nt at St Mary's Church
GV II
Unidentified brick chest tomb. Mid C18. Sides of yellow and plum coloured brick, projecting corners of plum and red brick supporting a Portland stone ledger slab. It has undergone fairly recent consolidation.
HISTORY: Daniel Lysons' 1800 survey of Middlesex lists two now-unidentifiable monuments at Bedfont, either of which might be this one: they commemorated Mary Whaley (d.1742) and John Fyler, merchant (d. 1756). One of a number of such monuments, indicating the affluence of East Bedfont at this time as a place for retirement.
