Monument 1807. Portland stone ashlar on a granite base, 120 feet high. Obelisk,
resting on a wide pedestal. The tapered shaft is recessed in the centre of each
side, the cap is above two V-shaped indentations and comprises a segmental head with recesses at the north and south face, the latter fitted with a bust of Nelson. The pedestal has recesses on the north and south faces, above a base, and the top is marked by a groove below a fillet, which turns up at each corner as acroteria. The south recess is inscribed "Consecrated to the Memory of Lord Viscount Nelson by the zealous attachment of those who fought at Trafalgar to perpetuate his triumph and their regret MDCCCV." The north recess is inscribed "The British Fleet consisted of Twenty Seven Ships of the Line of France and Spain Thirty Three Nineteen of which were taken or destroyed". Ancient Monument.
