C17, altered Mid C19. Attributed to Sir C Wren. 2 storeys, basement
and attic. Front elevation:- Brick walls stuccoed, stone moulded strings,
rusticated quoins, door surround. Very fine mndillion eaves cornice.
This front has been stuccoed at a later date, as the stucco is flush
with the quoins. Hipped slate roof. 3 windows C19 sashes. 1 dormer.
Doorway under right-hand window. Panelled door. Moulded stone architrave.
Flat moulded hood supported on carved consoles. Carved keystone - swag
motif. Side elevation is brick with raised brick surrounds to windows.
A contemporary rain water head has on it the initials F A. Contemporary
staircase.
Windows have been altered and have been repaired in their altered form.
This house was supposed to have been built by Charles II for Louise de
Querrouaille, Duchess of Portsmouth. See Wren Society, Vol: VII, page
20.
Nos 2 to 9 (consec), the Royal Hotel and garden wall, and Nos 22 and 23
form a group.
