House. Dated 1907; bylf H Baillie-Scott for Miss Rose E Douglas; later
alterations . Roughcast brick; plain tile roof, part replaced with
concrete tile, 1981; rough cast chimneys with tile cornices; wooden,
mullioned windows with leaded casements, decorative iron catches, and
tile dripmoulds on ground floor. L-shaped plan, having service wing
projecting to front right. 2 storeys. Entrance elevation; 5 bays,
1,3,1, end bays gabled and that on right projecting as wing. Left bay
has external chimney with offsets and small 2-light window on
different sides on each floor. Central entrance up step, has studded
panelled door, 2-light side window on right, tile dripmould, and
lozenge-shaped date stone over with initials of Rose Douglas and of
her companion Florence Firmstone; 2-light window to left; 2 above; and
stair cross-window above on right. Right bay (wing) gable has catslide
roof on left; 2-light window to each floor and stack on right; and to
re-entrant, windows of 5 lights and 1 light on ground floor, and of
3 lights above. Stack to rear ofbay 4. Garden elevation; 4 bays. Two
left bays gabled with tile kneelers and lozenge-shaped tile gable
vents; left bay has 2 light window on right, 4-light window above; bay
2 has flat-roofed 5-light bow window with 4-light window above
(replacement central lights); dated rainwater hopper between gables,
and chimney in valley. Roof comes down lower over right-hand bays. Bay
3 has loggia with tiled pavement and part-glazed door into lounge;
flat-roofed 4-light dormer above (2 lights replaced). Right bay has
transomed 5-light window returning round corners. Left return; 3-light
window to each floor; gable vent and kneelers as garden elevation.
Right return; windows of 1,2,and 3 lights; door moved to present
position from original position further to left. Interior; a number
of original features survive including wood block and brick floors,
panelled and board doors and cupboards, wall panelling and fireplaces.
Of particular note are the inglenook fireplaces in the lounge and
principal bedroom (above); the window seat in the lounge; and the C17
style wooden stair with turned balusters and pyramidal finials to
newels.
Both Miss Douglas and Miss Firmstone were notable figures in
contempoary city life.
