Wayside

Cottage, now outbuilding. C18, added to and altered. Rendered cob; thatch
roof. Originally 1 1/2 storeys, 1 bay; early addition to left side, and further
single-storey bay addition to left. Board door protected by late C20, open,
thatched porch with 1-light window to left and 2-light window to right, both
with tile sills; upper floor lit by eyebrow dormer with 2-light, 8-pane case-
ment. Stack at right end. Roof hipped on left, coming down low over first
addition. Rear: main block has the cob wall unrendered, on brick plinth
(central section with replacement brickwork), formerly protected by lean to (now
removed) the wall having groove for former upper edge of thatching and chopped-
off timber ends. At junction with first addition is wany post on cobble plinth
with brace to wall plate, and another post on left of small-pane 2-light window;
walling to right renewed in brieze block. Left return: mid C20 small-pane
2-light window; gable of corrugated iron. Interior: crude joists and purlins.
Situated as it is at the edge of the common and in a concealing hollow, it is
possible that this was built as a squatters cottage.
