Herriard Church of
England Primary School
II
1851. An early church school and house of Gothic style, with alterations and modern
rear extension. The centre is a tall gable, with a central stepped buttress separating
tall windows, which have stone mullions and transoms enclosing cast-metal lights of
lozenge form. To the east the roof is brought to a low eaves (below a gabled dormer),
with a brick arched gallery (now the entrance to the house but formerly also to the
school hall) ending in a diagonal stepped buttress, with a set back. One window unit
with a higher eaves. The west side has the high roof of the former T-shaped hall, but
this continues forward to a low eaves above a modern entrance, the west gable of the
old part having a carved stone plaque set within a pointed arch, with a carved heraldic
shield and the date 1851. Modern extensions to the house and school leave the front
displaying its original character. Tile roofing.
