C17, early C19. Massive rectangular block of 8 bays, with former openings on each
side at the third and sixth bay, that of the sixth bay on the east elevation being a
deep porch with walled sides. Thatched roof, with a hipped finish to the lower roof
of the porch, with a lower eaves on horizontal timber brackets. The walling is of red
brickwork in English bond, the exterior being patterned by alternating equal bands of
brick (3 courses) and knapped flint (3 courses), the deep plinth formed as a stepped
moulding in the middle of a brick band. With a slight slope from south to north the 3
parts of the east elevation have 8.4, 9.3, 11.3 bands. Vertical ventilation slits
occur at 2 levels (some now filled) and a few later windows have been inserted; 2 of
the former entrances are filled with brick walling. The roof truss has a tie-beam
supporting straight angled struts, with a collar at a higher level, 2 lines of purlins
being jointed into the principal rafters (with some wind braces). The 4 northern bays
have an inserted floor. The barn is said to have been a meeting place for Civil War
armies.
