Row of 3 chest tombs to members of the Sadler family,formerly
within a single railed enclosure. Limestone.
a) Chest tomb nearest church with inscriptions to John Sadler,
Yeoman of Bentham, died 1760 and Jane his wife, died 1787.
Limestone and sandstone. Two sunken inscription panels on the
south side with inscriptions to John and Jane Sadler. Two
sunken oval panels with spandrels decorated with single flowers
and inscriptions to John Sadler, Junior, died 1781 and Mary his
wife, died 1701. The inscription panels on both sides are
covered with a cream-coloured wash. Moulded plinth; sandstone
capping with moulded margin.
b) Chest tomb clm north of the preceding with inscription to John
Sadler, died 1796 on the south side, on a raised circular
inscription panel with a beaded edge moulding; raised foliate
fleur de lys in each corner, recessed marginal panels decorated
with hanging bell flower and ribbon ties. Inscription to
Hannah, wife of Joseph Sadler, died 1799 and Joseph Sadler died
1801 on a raised circular inscription panel on the north side
with a beaded edge moulding; bosses in each corner; marginal
panels with hanging bell flower decoration further fielded
inscription at the east and west ends. Moulded plinth.
Capping with moulded margin.
c) Chest tomb clm north of the preceding to Sarah Sadler, daughter
of John and Sarah Sadler of Shurdington, died.1841. Limestone
and sandstone. This monument otherwise matches (a) described
above.
