Terrace wall, and dog kennels. Mid C19 for J. Dent. Roughly
coursed, squared stone in retaining wall, ashlar above: wrought-
iron railings and stone-slate roof to dog kennels. Long, 'L'-plan
terrace wall with short return to west wing of Castle, and further
return beyond to dog kennels. East wall, in back of ha ha, rising
to plain string course at level of ground retained behind; wall
above in 17 bays with square piers between each. End bays low wall
with coped stone top, remainder blocking course with moulded top
edge, 17 square balusters with stopped-chamfered angles, moulded
rail. South wall, low wall to first bay, then short sloping
section, 3 stone steps on inside, continuous stone string wall on
side away from ha ha, with square base with urn at top. Thirteen
bays of balustraded wall, further steps and sloping section as
before, 5 bays balustrade, ending in octagonal stone pier, plinth
and pyramid top, forming gatepost and end of first return wall.
Double gates, similar pier, stone wall with moulded cap, top steps
down in 4 stages, up again once at corner, further octagonal pier.
Return described from outside, retaining high terrace: high plinth
up to about half way, then plinth steps down; 4 boarded doors,
under 4-centred arches, slit window between first 2. Moulded top
to wall above, sets back to octagonal pier, pyramid top. Doors
lead to vaulted cellars below terrace. To left wall with moulded
coping parallel to west wing, interrupted by late C20 concrete
steps. Lean-to dog kennels on left, 3-bay, boarded stable doors
with shuttered opening in bottom, iron railings on dwarf stone
walls to yards. First return wall with moulded cap, steps down in
3 stages from gate pier, up once to octagonal gate pier: pair of
wooden gates, further gate pier and step in wall as on right, wall
extending up to south-west corner of Dungeon Tower. Important
garden feature forming group with Castle, Church and fountain,
(q.v.).
