Description

PAINSWICK VICTORIA STREET
SO 8609 (part)
(south side)
8/379 St Mary's Cottage
GV II
House lying between street and churchyard. Probably late C18 but possibly
earlier origins. Coursed dressed limestone, concrete tile roof, two eaves
stacks, one in brick and one in concrete block. Two storeys and attic; the road
has C19 flush panelled door, two glazed lights, under C20 hood on iron
brackets. At first floor, right, a 2-light steel casement above a re-set ellip-
tical oculus. Gable to right is narrow one window width with 12-pane sashes at
3 levels; left gable, which is wider, has 2-light steel casement to attic under
flush lintel with key-stone, and a C20 glazed door, low left. To churchyard are
three 12-pane sashes, a small 4-pane casement set to former door opening, and,
left, 2-light steel casement. Although much modified, the building is important
as part of Victoria Street. Although the plan is trapezoidal, the gabled roof
is set to level eaves each side.
