Town Hall. Dated 1853 and 1871. Hard red brick with limestone dressings,
stone slate roof. Built in two stages, the earlier is gable to street over
an open ground floor, the later section set back, and with main facade
to North Street: entrance in internal corner. Gabled unit has large 1:4:1
transomed casement oriel with diamond leading, carried on heavy moulded
stone corbel, set over 3-bay open arcade with iron railings and gates to
square chamfered piers, with heavy square abacus carrying continuous frieze;
projecting clock on brackets, 1897. Set back wing similar design with 1:2:1
oriel and single light over pointed doorways with brick voussoirs; to right
on external corbelled stack. A building characteristic of Victorian civil
pride, and very vital to hold this corner at the town's centre.
