Large detached house. Part C17, extensively rebuilt and extended
1845 by Thomas Baker. Alterations and additions 1907-8 by Ernest
Gimson for F.F. McMeekan. Coursed and random rubble limestone;
ashlar chimneys; stone slate roof. Two-storey block; east end
and attics added; single-storey outbuilding range to west. South
front: 3-window fenestration to C19 front to left, all timber
cross-windows with leaded casements. Central doorway with 6-panel
door, ironwork porch dated 1845. Two full gables added to this
elevation by Gimson, attic casements lining-through with those
below. C20 extension of house to right includes gabled 2-storey
porch, doorway having double plank doors and deep stone lintel; 3-
light stone-mullioned casement above. Angled ground floor window
to left. Full gable to elevation further right; 2 ground floor
stone mullioned cross windows, single upper floor timber cross
window and attic casement on centre-line of gable. Two ridge-
mounted chimneys at gable ends of C19 house. Rear wing at east end
of house has chimney inscribed 'MCM 1908'. Rear: gabled addition
to rear of C19 structure has mullioned and transomed ground floor
casement; 3-light above. Casements with timber lintels to
remainder of rear elevation. West end: 2-storey projection with
hipped roof and chimney dated 1845 appears remodelling of C17
house, L-plan outbuilding with pigeon-holes in south gable being
contemporary.
Interior: Regency style doorcases and fireplaces in C19 part,
staircase having stick balusters and scrolled landing fascia.
Open-well timber staircase in hall to rear of C20 addition is a
fine example of Cotswold craftmanship with chamfered square
balustrade framing having plank panels, so unusual as to be
certainly Gimson's own work. Wide boarded floors, plank doors (all
with Bucknell ironmongery) and beamed ceilings are all typical of
Gimson's interior work. Simple stone fireplaces with plain
mantelshelfs having large chamfered openings. An important example
of Gimson's architectural work with virtually all the Arts and
Crafts fittings still in place.
