8/8 Railed enclosure of Hale family
monuments in south-west corner of
churchyard of Church of St. Kenel

Railed enclosure containing 17 tombs in total, of which three - 2
cross memorials and one marble slab tomb - are not of special
interest. Remaining 14 chest tombs of limestone date from late C17
to early C19 and are of Hale family. 2 monuments are of particular
interest:
a) Unidentified monument, closest to west door of church, early/mid
C18. Tall chest tomb on high base with moulded plinth and
capping, curved ends and very large rounded pyramidal cap.
b) Monument to Matthew Hale, died 1706, and his wife Maria. Chest
tomb on large shallow base, moulded plinth and capping with
indented long sides, elaborate moulded cap the length of the
chest rising to a section with coat of arms on north side with
gadrooned edge, surmounted by urn finial.
