Small summerhouse or gazebo. Early C18. Brick with stone
dressings, roof not visible. Small square structure of basement
and raised ground floor. Baroque style, front has Ionic pilasters
to ground level, cut across by stone cornice marking change in
floors, and central doorcase with pilasters and broken segmental
pediment. Main cornice projects forward over end and door
pilasters. Central attic storey with parapet swept up on each side
and flanking decorative stone urns on front corners. Attic feature
has relief carved pilasters and broken segmental pediment with
large grotesque head in centre. Doorcase has half-glazed original
door, lower 2 panels fielded, and flanking 8-pane sashes with
splayed brick voussoirs, stone keystone and moulded stone
architrave. Similar 12-pane sashes to other 3 sides, blocked to
rear. Rear corners both have small ashlar flues but fireplace only
in right hand rear corner. Other corner contains shell niche
cupboard with original painted grotesques and classical ornament.
Interior contains very high quality oak panelling still unpainted.
Flight of 10 splayed moulded stone steps up to door, held by iron
cramps and with twisted iron handrails. Cambered head archway to
basement on right hand return, down 4 stone steps. Right hand
front corner beginning to crack badly at time of survey (December
1985).
