GV II
Stone balustrading and ashlar retaining walls immediately south and
east of Rendcomb College (q.v.). Built c1866. Designed by P.C.
Hardwick for Sir F.H. Goldsmid. Balustrading outlining a
rectangular area immediately south of the entrance front. The
balustrading on the north side is set on an ashlar wall c1.5m
height and is linked to the lower balustrading via a moulded
bracket decorated with fruit and flowers at the north-east corner;
lion's head above the bracket. Entrances towards the centre of
each side of the balustrading flanked by stone urns with gadrooned
bases and lions' heads in the position of the handles. The urns
flanking the southern entrance have been removed. Two straight
ashlar walls retain terraces on the south side; similar walls
retain a lower 3-sided terrace. Urns at intervals along the
terrace retaining walls and at the top and bottom of the flights of
stone steps linking the terraces.
