House, at one time 3 dwellings. C15, possibly for R. Ware, Cellarer of
St. Albans Abbey. Floored and heated in C17, altered C20. Timber frame,
exposed with roughcast infill. Tiled roof. Originally an open hall with
through passage and 2 storey ends all under a unitary roof. 6 bays. Now
all 2 storeys. Entrance to left of centre with original 4 centred hollow
moulded arch to recess with inner plank door. 2 lower end bays to left,
3 hall and upper end bays to right. Exposed posts, mid-rail and studs. 1
and 3 light flush frame C20 leaded casements. Cross axial red brick
stack inserted in front of ridge to left of entrance. Right end stack
added later. Gable end exposed framing with jowled posts. Rendered stack
and C20 addition to rear. Interior: original screens passage, three 2
centred chamfered arches, that to centre broader. Stop chamfered
bearers, arched braces to braced crown post soot blackened roof. (VCH
