Terrace with Statues to
West Front of
Chatsworth House
GV II
Terracing with walls, piers and statues, along the west front of
Chatsworth House. c1690s, altered mid-C18 by James Paine, and
c1830 by Wyatville. Coursed squared sandstone and ashlar.
Along the west side of the house a late C17 raised walk with
ashlar retaining wall, divided by pilasters into bays with
moulded panels. Iron balustrade. In the centre a double flight
return staircase, each flight with an intermediate landing.
Frostwork panels and on the lower landings, round-arched niches
with statues. In the centre a large round-arched doorway and
demi-columns with banded frostwork rustication, supporting a
segmental pediment. Parapet and urns above. Raised formal
garden to the west laid out with parterres by Wyatville.
Retaining wall with square piers supporting statues of
gladiators and urns. At the north west and south west corner
terminal pedestals. These survive from the late C17 gardens and
have panelled sides with relief carving, moulded cornices and
statues of sphinxes carved by Cibber. Linked by an ashlar
retaining wall with balustraded parapet divided into bays. This
wall continues to the north and returns eastwards, and also to
the south. To the south east an arch and similar retaining wall
to the south lawn. The gardens and park are included on the
Gardens Register at Grade I.
