SK 70 SW ROLLESTON

1/92 Church of St. John
(Previously listed as Church)
29.12.66 (Dedication not known)

II*

Church. C13 tower, the rest rebuilt in 1740. Coursed squared ironstone rubble
with limestone dressings. West tower, with naved chancel in one. Tower is of
3 stages, but the upper 2 are very low, and it is generally small. Square headed
paved lights to west and to bell chamber. Plain corbel table and embattled parapet.
Nave and chancel form 3 bays, buttressed and embattled in an early English style,
with Y-traceried lights with curved head and hoodmould. North door in slightly
ogival arch. South doorway has stone porch roof between the butresses. Triple
lancet east window. Very simple interior : the single chamfered tower arch is
almost round arched and springs from semi-octagonal responds. C13 octagonal
font and piscina. Roof probably dates from 1960's restoration. Some late C19
stained glass : traditional saints figures in east window, Saint George and an
angel in preraphaelite style in tower window, C18 stalls. One Richard Green
was responsible for the rebuilding.
