House. 1862-3. By E.M. Barry. For Sir James Kay-Shuttleworth. French
Renaissance style. Rock-faced limestone with sandstone ashlar dressings on
basement with chanelled rustication and swept hipped pavilion slate roof with
fishscale bands. South facade of 2 storeys and basement and attic, 4 bays.
Battered basement with roll mould over; ground floor has enriched cast iron
balcony and cornice; 1st floor has sill course and entablature. Windows have
ashlar surrounds and splat balustrading to aprons, and are sashed with single
glazing bars and horns, those to ground floor have French windows. Attic has
round-headed dormer windows with hoods and lead-clad roofs. Cross-axial stack
with moulded cap. Bowed 3-bay east end has similar details, with recessed bay
to north, which has spiral fire escape. 2-bay west end has roughcast recessed
1st bay; 2nd bay has tripartite windows. North facade of 3 bays. Ground floor
sill course. Central 1st floor tripartite window has to frieze above the
inscription: "KYND KYNN KNAWNE KEPE". Porch has entrance with overlight and
flanking lights and paired panelled doors. Keystone with letter 'S', cornice
and splat balustrade with central armorial bearing and ball finials. 2 stacks
with moulded caps. Sir James Kay-Shuttleworth Bart, 1804-77, was an important
Manchester man, noted for his work on educational and medical issues.
