Description

ST BRIDGET BECKERMET CALDER ABBEY
NY 00 NE
4/62 Fishing box on the
river bank to the east
of the Abbey ruins
GV II
Stone seat of uncertain date constructed of chamfered jamb stones from the Abbey
ruins and associated with the monastic settlement. The construction stands
c.0.35 m high. The south and west faces are re-used chamfered jamb stones; the
east face and top are rough-dressed slabs. The north side is open and provides
access to a void which is said to have been used by the monks when fishing, to
store their catch ... the association with the monks for fishing purposes is
unlikely as there is evidence that adjacent fields served as the monastic fish
ponds.
