Church. Pre-conquest origins, C12 nave and clerestory, early C13 aisles and
chancel. C15 west tower, north aisle rebuilt and north chancel chapel added
1880 by G G Scott. West tower, 4-bay aisled nave with south porch, 3-bay
chancel with north chapel. Ashlar, lead and slate roofs. West tower of
3 stages, approximately 34 metres high. Moulded plinth, string-courses to
first and belfry stages. Angle-buttresses with ogee-headed canopied niches,
panels with blank cusped tracery, and crocketed gablets at upper levels.
First floor, south elevation: pointed window with Y-tracery, under hood-
mould with carved stops. Belfry openings of 3 transomed lights with
Perpendicular tracery under hood-moulds with stops and crocketed ogee
gablets. Battlemented parapet with traceried panels and 8 crocketed
pinnacles. West elevation: west door with continuous shallow roll moulding
under crocketed ogee label with foliated finial flanked by heraldic shields.
Pointed 4-light west window under crocketed ogee hood-mould with foliated
finial flanked by small heraldic shields. Niche with moulded base and
crocketed canopy to first floor, under carved panel with angels carrying
heraldic shield. Nave: chamfered plinth, butresses with 2 offsets and
grotesques, two 4-light square-headed windows with Curvilinear tracery in
double-chamfered surrounds. South aisle west window 4-light with
Curvilinear tracery under hood-mould with stops of monarchs heads, under
raised coped gable. Early C13 south door of 3 orders, with colonnettes and
keel mouldings, under hood-mould with dog-tooth and stops: to right, a
Paschal lamb, to left, a beast head. Nave clerestory has C12 round-headed
windows throughout. Plain corbel table. Pointed 2-light window with
Perpendicular tracery under hood-mould to raised coped gable with cross
finial. Chancel: low chamfered plinth, shallow buttresses, with crocketed
pinnacles, sill band. Round-headed priest's door of 2 orders with C19
attached shafts with stiff-leaf capitals and keel-mouldings, and outer
order of palmette ornament. 2 square-headed 2-light windows with
Perpendicular tracery under labels with stops of human and beast heads.
Parapet with moulded coping. 5-light east window with Perpendicular tracery
under segmental arch and label with beast-stops. Raised gable with moulded
coping and cross finial. Interior: north and south arcades of c1200 with
water-holding bases, round piers and abaci, and round-headed double-
chamfered arches. Roll-moulded string to north and south walls beneath
clerestory sills. Font of c1180: goblet-shaped with 4 colonnettes with
waterleaf capitals. C14 chancel arch with pointed double-chamfered head
dying into responds; C14 piscina with cusped ogee head to chancel south
wall. Interesting collection of C12 architectural fragments in chancel
north chapel.
