House. Late C18-early C19 with earlier origins. Limestone rubble with some
re-used ashlar blocks and red brick dressings. Brick front and stacks.
Renewed pantile roof. L-shaped on plan. 2 storeys, 3 bays; symmetrical.
Central part-glazed door under fanlight with mock glazing bars flanked by
16-pane flush sashes. 3-course first floor band. 2 similar first floor
sashes, with a 12-pane sash above the door. All openings have segmental
brick arches. Stepped eaves with plain cornice board. Hipped roof, end
stacks. Left and right returns have re-used ashlar blocks for lower rear
quoins. Rear wing, in similar materials, has hung and sliding sashes with
glazing bars, and dentilled brick eaves cornice. Interior contains fielded
panel window shutters and doors. In the late C16-early C17 Twigmore was
known as a Catholic refuge. John Wright, one of the Gunpowder Plot
conspirators, lived there, and local tradition identifies the Hall with the
Plot.
