Farmhouse. Late C16, with later alterations and additions. Timber-framed,
painted brick infill, brick replacement walling and refacing, tiled roofs,
2 external coursed sandstone rubble chimney stacks, to west and north
elevations, with paired diagonal brick shafts, also 3 diagonal brick shafts
to east of main ridge. Hall and cross-wing, each of 3 framed bays; former
passage blocked by inserted fireplace; also single framed bay added to north
elevation of hall in angle with service wing. Two storeys, attic and cellar
beneath parlour wing. Framing of mainly square panels, 4 from sill to wall-
plate; short, straight braced in upper corners of cross-wings and some long
straight braces in side and north elevations; the additional north bay has
long diagonal braces in lower corners of upper and lower two rows of framed
panels; trusses with double collars, 4 struts to lower collar with 2 above
to upper collar exposed in gable ends. Main elevation: framing only exposed
at first floor level. Central bay of main range has a ground floor casement
with cambered head, a first floor casement and entrance in left bay beneath
catslide roof on timber upright and with a half-glazed door; left cross-wing
gable end has 2 ground floor glazing bar sashes, a first floor casement and
attic light; right cross-wing gable end has a ground and first floor casement,
an attic light and a multi-paned door to right of ground floor window. The
present main entrance is in the west side elevation and has a lean-to porch and
C20 timber door. The entrance in the north elevation is of interest being in
line with the former passage and is approached beneath the jettied first floor
of the additional north bay which is supported to the left by a large carved
bracket. Also in north elevation is a first floor wood mullioned window on
east side of projecting parlour wing. Interior: Roof of open trusses, in
general, and of double purlin construction. Main beams are stop-chamfered;
cross-beamed ceiling to south of service bay, also cross-beamed parlour
ceiling to south of service bay, also cross-beamed parlour ceiling which has
parallel plaster mouldings and beams have a double moulding stopped by a tongue.
