Pair of cottages, now one house. Early C18, enlarged mid-C18. Part
timber-framed with painted brick infill on brick plinth, some brick
replacement walling, part brick tiled roof, brick end stacks. Two storeys;
in 2 parts. Timber-framed part to left: 2 framed bays, irregularly sized
panels, mainly 3 from sill to wall-plate. Front elevation has 2 ground
floor casements, 3 first floor casements and planked door to left bay,
within gabled, timber-framed porch on brick plinth. Brick part to right:
2 ground floor casements with cambered heads, 2 first floor casements, part-
glazed double doors to right also with cambered head. Interior Older part
has single, trenched purlins and intermediate queen strut truss. Outshut to
rear of older part and C20 extension to rear of later part.
The cottages originally belonged to the Earl of Dudley and formed the
private coal wharf of the Witley Court estate. The carter lived in one
half and the coal wharf caretaker in the other. The actual blue brick wharf
beside the river has now been grassed over and is not included.
