5/41 The Old Rectory

House. C16, with later alterations. Square-panelled and close-studded
timber-framing with painted brick and plastered infill, sandstone rubble
plinth, stone slate roofs. Central hall flanked by cross-wings, large
axial stack, through-passage. Two storeys and attics. South front: gable
end of cross-wing to left with projecting upper storey to west with moulded
bressummer, small 2-light window in gable, 3-light window to first and
similar window to ground floor, central hall block with irregularly spaced
fenestration to first floor, one 3-light window and two 2-light windows,
3-light window to left of square-headed doorway with moulded frame and ledged
door, gable end of cross-wing to right with two 2-light windows to first floor
and three similar windows set alongside each other in square panelled framing
to ground floor. The interior was not inspected but is said to retain
triangular doorheads and fireplaces with moulded jambs. (RCHM, Vol 3, p 67).
