Lower Welson Farmhouse

Farmhouse. C17 origins, altered and extended mid- to late C19. Rubble
with plain tiled roofs and C19 brick stacks. Originally of L-plan with
wings extending to south and east; additional wing to east built in angle
in C19. Two storeys. South front elevation: main range (additional east
wing) has two ground floor 2-light windows with cambered heads, two first
floor 2-light windows and the main entrance which has a gabled porch on
chamfered timber posts and a door with four flush panels and a cambered
head. Gable end of south wing to left has a double doorway on the ground
floor and two irregularly-sized and spaced 2-light casements on the first
floor; all openings have concrete lintels. Interior: recorded to have some
original moulded ceiling beams with shaped brackets and a late C17 stair-
case with turned balusters and moulded handrails. (RCHM, III, p 55, item 38).
