Farmhouse. Early C17 with mid-C19 alterations and additions. Part timber-
framed with painted brick infill on rubble base, part rubble with brick
replacement walling and refacing and roughcast to south and west; plain tiled,
partly hipped roofs with brick ridge stacks including group of four C19
diagonal stacks at north end of centre range. H-plan; central range of roughly
three bays with large chimney at north end forming lobby entrance and having an
intersecting north range of probably two framed bays and a tall two-bay south
range. Two storeys. Framing: exposed at west end of north range. Two rows
of panels at first floor level, short straight braces in upper corners and
collar and tie-beam truss with two struts. West front elevation: windows are
mainly C19 casements. Central range has 4-light ground floor window, 3-light
first floor window, main entrance at northern end and a lean-to addition
with a 2-light window at the southern end. North gable end has a 2-light
ground floor window and a 3-light first floor window. South gable end has a
2-light ground floor window and a rendered external chimney. Large wing
adjoins north end which has lean-to additions with catslide roofs to front
and rear. Also lean-to addition and single-storey wing at rear. Interior:
the central range is recorded as having a mid-C17 panelled overmantel on the
ground floor flanked by demi-figures supporting a carved frieze and dentilled
cornice. On the first floor there is recorded to be a room completely panelled
in oak, with a carved frieze and with a ceiling of intersecting moulded beams
enclosing plastered compartments with moulded edges. (VCH IV, p 241).
