House. C14, with some C17 and early C19 alterations, restored late C20.
Timber-frame with rendered infill on a coursed rubble plinth under a tile
roof. Three framed bays aligned north-east/south-west, the two northern
bays originally an open hall. Stack on south gable of rubble partially
enclosed by a C20 framed extension of one bay. North-west front of two
storeys to centre (raised early C19) with two windows, a 3-light and a 2-
light casement. Ground floor has two pairs of 3-light windows with C20
wooden, mullions, and a 3-light casement to right. C20 extension is single
storey with two 3-light casements. The central entrance has a C20 tiled
canopy supported on two pieces of cruck blade. Framing is three square panels
high. Internally the central truss of the hall is a cruck with arch-braced
collar with raking cusped struts above. The northern bay of the hall contains
an intermediate collar truss with similar raking struts above. Mortices in
the soffit of the collar indicate that this was a spere truss. The lower end
of the house was probably housed in a lean-to, now demolished. The hall
floor was probably inserted in the C17. The fireplace in the upper end has
moulded jambs, probably of medieval date. (RCHM, 3, pp 48-9, no 15; BoE, p 120).
