4.7.52 The Old Rectory House
II*
Early C16 timber-framed hall house restored by antiquarian G M Arnold, FSA, and
architect Sir Herbert Baker in the 1890's. They discovered rebateless mullions
showing that its original windows were unglazed and soot-stained roof timbers
indicating that it originally had no chimney, also a 1656 token in the ground floor
ceiling plaster showing that the hall was divided into 2 storeys after that date. The
timber-frame was left exposed and infilled with roughcast. Hipped and gabled tiled
roof. Ground floor has C19 windows and gabled porch. First floor sash windows with
glazing bars intact. Source: Arch Cant XX 1893.
