1890. Projecting portico with simicircular end. Ashlar. Paired Tuscan columns
support entablature enriched with egg-and-dart dentils; and balustraded parapet.
Rear wall divided by pilasters into a wide central bay and 2 narrow side bays.
Decorative wrought iron screens to side windows and to side lights of richly
carved double doors. Cornice head and stone tympanum above carved with eagle,
fruit and date 1890. Carved coats of arms in fruit and leaf borders above side
windows. At right of portico a long passage wall of red brick with ashlar pilasters,
entablature and balustraded parapet. Directly below architrave small paired
windows divided by stone pilasters. Carved brick panels between main pilasters.
Theatre block, partly concealed by later buildings adjoining, is of red brick
with angle pilasters and moulded cornice in several planes. Outer fringe of roof
is low pitched and leaded. From this rises high attic with windows of pronounced
batter divided by curved buttresses reaching from edge of roof to wood eaves
cornice of attic. Diagonal buttresses at- corners. High pitched, hipped, tiled
attic roof.
Inside, a vestibule wood-panelled with fluted and reeded pilasters and entablature.
Central glazed dome and flanking skylights. Marble floor with massive marble
fireplace.
To right of vestibule a passage entirely walled and floored in variegated marbles.
Corinthian pilasters, with gilded capitals, rest on plinths and support entablature.
Ornate plaster ceiling with raised borders and panels, the centre ones glazed.
Theatre, at end of passage, has backstage screen of 4 tall Doric columns, entablature
and balustraded parapet, all in green marble. Apsidal end behind. Deep coved
cornice below raised attic windows. Pedimented entablature surround to entrance,
similar marble to stage screen. Dark green marble dado.
