Public house. Late C15, former open hall between the 2
crosswings replaced in late C17 by block of 2-storeys and attics.
Size of original hall appropriate to a manor house (RCHM
Typescript). Timberframed and plastered with low brick
projecting plinth. Red tiled gabled roofs. Red brick chimney in
cental range front slope of roof one third from E end with 2
diamond shafts (rebuilt). A long 2-storeys frontage with lower
broad jettied crosswings at each end. Centre has 3 adjoining
small gables and is jettied at a higher level than the
crosswings. C19 1-storey flat-topped, off centre, canted bay
projection with corner posts and cornice, infilled with sash
windows and central pilastered double door. 1 flush boxed sash
window with 8/8 panes to each gable on the upper floor with C19
pierced and shaped bargeboards over. Centre gable has no window
but a large wrought iron bracket with swinging signboard. Canted
bay sash windows below the overhang of each crosswing. End
gables and one small gable have large identical relief panels of
lion rampant surmounted by a crown. W crosswing extends to rear
and is black weatherboarded. Lateral chimneys to each crosswing
with diagonal shafts (renewed). On E end a small gabled proch
with similar C19 curved brackets and trefoil pierced spandels as
now support the front jetty. Exposed timber framing inside in E
wall of W wing, and in S end of this wall a blocked 4-light
window with diamond mullions formerly looking out over the lower
roof of the original hall. C17 plain timber framing with tension
braces and arched braces of shallow curvature. Distinctive inn-
planning at 1st floor. Present Cl9 stair in old position.
Bolection moulded fire surround in 1st floor of central range
(RCHM Typescript). Part of a group with No 3 and the Clock
House.
