Wellhouse and communal bakehouse. Mid C19 for Brownlow estate. Oak
timber frame on chamfered red brick base with square stone pads for
posts, fine-jointed white brick infill between posts, and steep red
tiled roof with tiled ridges, hipped at W, and semi-octagonal apse at E
end over open galleried wellhouse. An ornate small single-storey
building isolated to E of Chantry Cottages orientated E-W with very tall
octagonal white brick chimney rising from E end of ridge serving the
bakehouse entered from W end by framed plank door in heavy frame. Small
2-light window in each sidewall, interrupted by the chamfered oak posts
of the building. Turned balusters and moulded handrails between
chamfered posts to open semi-octagonal E end with straight braces to
wallplate. Ornate oak frame over well with moulded crosspiece between
posts with turned knobs. Spindle with winding-drum, rope, and bucket,
turned by S-handle at S end and 4-spoked flywheel with handle at N.
Access gate in S side of balustrade. Formerly a well to Chantry Farm.
