House, now a Public House. Mid C17, W front and part of S end brick
cased in mid C18, altered in early C19 (canal opened 1815), rear
extensions c.1976. Timber frame, exposed with red brick infill on N end,
front and S end to eaves height cased in C18 red brick with random blue
bricks and lighter red brick quoins and window jambs. Alternate blue
headers in segmental arches to ground floor windows. Whitewashed brick
rear extensions. C19 red brick rear outshut. Steep old red tile roofs
with catslide extension to rear, and gabled bathroom dormer behind
chimney. A 3-cells, 2 storeys, internal chimney plan house facing W,
with large chimney 1/3 from S end with 2 flues serving central room on
each floor. Former lobby entry by chimney but moved to N end of middle
room. 3-windows W front has narrow plastered recess over position of
former doorway by chimney. Chamfered plinth. Wallplate of timber framed
front exposed. Flush 3-light casement windows. 2 LH ground floor windows
replaced by 2 C19 canted small bays flanking the half-glazed door all
linked by a flat hood. Plastered S gable triangle. Framed N gable has
clasped purlins on collar and queen-struts. Interior has exposed framing
in N wall, heavy flat joists in the narrow N bay (many re-used timbers),
heavy wide axial beam and large internal rear-wall chimney with timber
lintel in S bay. Wider middle bay has 2 parallel axial beams with
squared joists and a large open fireplace at S end with timber chamfered
lintel and bench-ends to seats inside. C19 external small N gable
chimney for fireplace to N bay.
