Farmhouse. Dated 1673 on timber in bedroom with another date and initials over
entrance IW (wife's initial blank) 1745. Pink sandstone rubble walls with
raised quoins and eaves cornice, on chamfered plinth. Graduated greenslate roof
with coped gables and kneelers; banded sandstone chimney stacks, 2 partly
rebuilt in brick. 2 storeys, 7 bays. Off-centre C20 door in bolection
architrave in doorcase with fluted pilasters and broken segmental pediment. Flat 2-light stone-mullioned windows, probably originally with
transoms,in stone architraves. Left C20 glazed porch covers C20 door in stone
architrave. Rear outshut was probably added in 1745. Interior: in left
kitchen end a late C17 segmental-arched stone fireplace complete with brick oven
and recesses. Right of the fireplace was a spiral staircase which led up to
first floor and attic, but now blocked. C17 beamed ceiling. The right room was
altered c.1745 with projecting stone fireplace and moulded plaster ceiling. C18
panelled doors throughout. Not listed in RCHM, Westmorland, 1936. Left
concrete barns are not of interest.
