Blue Coat School (front block)
- II
House, now school. c1830 by John Forster. Stucco with slate roof. A
symmetrical composition of two storeys with two bays on each side of three-
bay two-storey bow. Facade has pilasters flanking outer pairs of bays, and
a cornice with blocking course. In front of the bow are four giant Ionic
columns. All the first floor windows interrupt the architrave. Above each
column of the bay there is a laurel wreath on the frieze. Windows sashed
with no glazing bars. On the ground floor the middle window of the bow has
an architrave and the outer windows have French windows with margin lights.
The left-hand bay now has a first floor door to an iron fire escape. The
outer pair of bays both have separate pitched roofs. Formerly known as
"The Terrace". Illustrated in VCH, Staffordshire, Vol 7, p 176.
