1893. Red brick with stone dressings; slate roof. A symmetrical composition
consisting of a gabled centrepiece flanked on either side by a low porch.
The centre piece stands on a high brick podium that incorporates the coursed
stone battered bases of the brick turrets left and right of the gable. The
turrets terminate in typically Arts and Crafts stone cupolas. Beneath the
gable, the reading room window, large and of Palladian type, its divisions
marked by triplets of slender columns without entastis and, above that, a triplet
of arches standing on a stone string course. Richly carved and bracketted
stone eaves cornice. Left and right of this, a lower block in which there
is a single tall arched window. Left and right of this centrepiece, the entrances
up steps within a low porch in which 2 arches with elaborate wrought iron
gates and divided one from another by a short fat column that dies into its
base.
