Description

BIRMINGHAM SUTTON COLDFIELD

SP 19 NW TAMWORTH ROAD

2/140 Collets Brook Farmhouse

II

Turnpike toll house; now farmhouse. Early C19 extended in circa
mid Cl9. Red brick in mixed garden wall bond. Slate roof with
gabled ends and deep eaves at front, lead rolls to hips over front
bay. Brick gable end stacks.

Original toll house is of rectangular (probably 2-room) plan with
entrance in central canted bay. In circa mid C19 a wing was built
at rear.

2 storeys. Symmetrical east front has central 2-storey canted bay
with panelled door with small C20 wooden porch, flanking casements
in side walls and 16-pane sash above with flanking blind windows.
The north and wouth gable ends each has elliptical recess with
imposts, the south sendered, the north with 2 windows on each
floor, one blind. Wing at rear has splayed north west corner
because of alignment of side road and casement on south side.
Interior not inspected.

Note: Probably dates from the Tamworth Road Turnpike of 1807.
