II

Church, 1836-8, by H J Stevens of Derby. Chancel added in 1894-5; restored
1948-52. Of ashlar with slate roofs. 4-bay aisleless nave, chancel, transeptal
chapels. 4 stage W tower with angle buttresses, battlements and pinnacles, mast and
weathercock; lit by plain lancets and a 2-light window with Y-tracery at 1st floor
level to the west. The body of the church lit by cusped lancets with hood-moulds
over, between buttresses. Interior has brass commemorating 35 miners killed in a
fire at Whitwick Colliery 19 April 1898. N Pevsner Leicestershire and Rutland,
