6.6.61 Church of St Mary

II*

Church, C12 and C13. C19 roofs, restorations and chancel rebuilding. Coursed
rubble with ashlar dressings to nave, squared rubble to chancel. Coped gable-ended
stone tile roofs. Nave and slightly taller chancel, without aisles. Double
bellcote on west gable. C13 and later fenestration, restored. South wall of
chancel, "low-side" window in form of quatrefoil in square panel. Very fine C12
south doorway, flanked by single spiral-fluted shafts with cushion capitals carrying
round chevron-moulded arch. Round hood-mould with lozenge decoration above.
Tympanum with half-length figure of Christ blessing, flanked by angels. Jambs
carved with scenes including ?Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Pointed chancel
arch with chevron moulding. Said originally to have been the Chapel to Essendine
Castle, the site of which adjoins the church to the north-east.
