II

Farmhouse, dated 1655 on lintel of front door; altered. Coursed sandstone rubble with quoins, slate roof. T-shaped: single-depth 2-bay plan with rear stair turret. Two storeys, almost symmetrical; doorway offset right of centre has large jambstones and lintel with worn lettering P 1655 G E, and a hoodmould; 2 sashed windows at ground floor and 3 above, and some remains of earlier openings on both floors to left. Gable chimneys. Right gable wall has inserted door and a small window at ground floor, 2 double-recessed windows with hoodmoulds at 1st floor: 2 lights with a cavetto-moulded mullion, and a single light. Rear has similar cavetto-mullioned windows with hoodmoulds: in 1st bay 3 and 2 lights on each floor (linked hoodmoulds at ground floor), the stair turret breaking into the ends of the hoodmoulds, and in the 2nd bay 3 lights at 1st floor; stair turret, which rises above eaves level, has a 2-light window, and a single light at attic level. Interior: tongue-stopped chamfered beams; spiral newel-post staircase to attic level; timber-framed 1st floor partitions, original batten and board doors with pull handles. NB: plan type, with central door and lateral passage leading to stair, is either an unusually early example in this area, or a later alteration.
