Large house, now ruinous. 1596; C17 and C18. Stone with quoins, 2-storey central block with massive 3-centred ingle-nook fireplace which has coned back and stone bench. To right of fireplace is a walled recess and to left a doorway leading to entrance lobby and stone steps to first floor. SW wall of hall has 12-light mullioned window; NE wall 2 doors, one with spandrel shield dated 1596. SE wing is of 3 storeys, much altered in C18. Connections with Bronte family reported to be 'Ferndean Manor' of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre' and the setting of Hallewell Sutcliffe's 'Mistress Barbara Cunliffe'. Scheduled ancient monument.
