Description

WRIGHTINGTON OLD WASH LANE (off)
SD 51 SW
5/109 South Tunley Farmhouse
19-11-1951
GV II

House. 1675, altered C19. Sandstone rubble with concrete tile roof. Half-
H plan. 2 storeys. Continuous plinth. Quoins show some tooling of C19
type. Cross-wings are each of one bay and have windows of 2 lights with
projecting moulded stone surrounds and flat-faced mullions. Recessed
centre has a 3-light mullioned window of C18 type on each floor. Redder
sandstone around these windows suggests rebuilding. To the right is a
single-storey gabled porch which has a chamfered doorway with canted
head. Above the doorway is a stone inscribed: '1675 RHM'. Chimneys, with
brick caps, in line with doorway and on ridge of left-hand (south-west)
cross-wing. The latter has 2 shafts linked by bricks placed diagonally.
Interior: central room has firehood bressumer and a heck forming a baffle
entry. The 2 axial beams have quarter-round mouldings. The front room of
the left-hand cross-wing contains some C17 panelling with scribed
mouldings, including a fireplace surround inscribed: 'R-M 1676'. Other
rooms not examined.
