House, C17 and C19 externally but containing elements of possibly C15
cruck-framed building altered probably in C16. Coursed sandstone with quoins
to south-east corner, stone slate roof with chimney at south-east corner and
north gable. Two bays, on north-south axis, single depth with west side
passage. Two storeys (probably raised); externally only south bay C17: south
gable front has continuous dripcourse which carries round right side, moulded
Tudor-arched doorway to left, 4 windows on each floor: a small square and a
tall double-chamfered light next to the door, and 2 double-chamfered 2-light
windows with hoodmoulds (now casements) above the door on different levels,
and to the right on each floor 2 vertical rectangular double-chamfered windows
(also casements), the upper under one hoodmould. Right return wall of this
bay has 2 similar windows on each floor. North bay of less interest.
Interior: partition wall between bays incorporates full cruck truss with cross
rail at ground floor, tie-beam at 1st floor, collar yoke, and post and rail
framing on both floors; cross-corner fireplaces on both floors with moulded
Tudor-arch surrounds. History: original timber-framed building thought to be
service wing of former hall house to west.
