CLAYTON-LE-MOORS
CLAYTON HALL DRIVE
The Barn
(Formerly listed as Barn c.50 metres west of Clayton Hall Farmhouse)
GV
II
Cruck-framed barn, possibly C16, with later shippon at east end.
Coursed rubble walls, slate roof with some corrugated sheet.
Rectangular plan c. 35 metres long in total, of which barn is c. two-
thirds (no joint line in walls); barn is 5 bays, with opposed wagon
doors to 3rd bay, various windows of little interest. Interior: 4
full cruck trusses; all have curved blades of heavy scantling rising
from ground level (stylobates hardly detectable), and joined at the
apex by collar yokes, all are tied into walls by spurs, and have spurs
to dorsals which carry 2 pairs of trenched windbraced purlins (crudely
chamfered); 1st and 4th trusses are now open to the yoke, 2nd and 3rd
have collars, and all have some vacant housings (possibly for former
spurs or tie beams). Cruck trusses now lean to west but are otherwise
in good condition. Shippon has loft and modern roof.
