WORSTHORNE WITH HURSTWOOD
HURSTWOOD
The Great Barn
(Formerly listed as Barn on north east side of road opposite Hurstwood Hall, previously listed as "Barn A").
17.12.68
GV
II*
Barn. Probably late C16; altered. Coursed sandstone rubble, stone slate
roof slightly swept over aisles, with 2 translucent panels near the ridge.
Aisled 6-bay plan, with opposed recessed wagon entrances to the 4th bay
from the west end. Mullioned 3 light window some slit breathers in east
gable, some other inserted windows and doors. Principal feature of
interest is the interior, which is of post-and-truss construction with
aisles on both sides: posts on stone stylobates, with archbracing to the
beams and to aisle struts, 2 pairs of purlins to the nave, and probably
also to each aisle. Good example of aisled barns found in this District,
but otherwise rare in this County.
