Manufacturer's mansion, 1860's. Red and blue brick with stone
dressings, steeply-pitched slate roofs with shaped gables, various
chimneys with weathered caps. Two linked but unequal ranges giving
a 4-bay south front, a 2-bay east end, and a shorter 4-bay entrance
front to the carriage drive. Basement and 2½ storeys: in Jacobean
style with diaper patterning, 2 bands between floors, prominent moulded
cornice bearing a balustrade with urn finials linking the gables. The
second bay of the entrance front is a rectangular 2½ storey gabled bay which
has in its left side a raised front door protected by a large single-storey
round-arched stone porch in Rennaissance style, with steps to the front
and a balustrade in the side arch, and in the wall above a large carved
stone shield in a panel. Most windows to ground and 1st floors are 4
and 3 lights with moulded wooden frames and high transoms, attic windows
in gables are of 2 lights. Left return wall has 2 gables, and a large
rectangular bay window to ground floor, approached by balustraded steps.
South (garden) side has 3 gables, and the 2nd bay is set back and has at
ground floor a semi-circular bay window with stone parapet. Interior:
extravagant Renaissance and Jacobean style decoration and fittings,
principally a panelled entrance hall and Jacobean style staircase;
moulded plaster frieze, cornice and ceiling of the drawing room and dining
room, and the chimney pieces in these rooms: in the former, classical with
superimposed orders enclosing a picture in a moulded surround: in the
latter, of Jacobean style wooden panelling with a heavy entablature;
radiator cabinets designed in matching style.
